Akua

Ghanaian-American DJ Akua makes her Japan debut at MIDNIGHT EAST,  the club night series by Spotify O-EAST and AZUMAYA on Friday, 5th September.

Born in LA and moving to New York in 2015 then now based in Berlin, Akua is an explorer of US techno history, blending her extensive archive with modern techno through her exceptional sense and mixing skills. Despite the rise of high BPM techno, her sets, which avoid trends, feature records from the 1990s to early 2000s that embody the raw energy of American techno. Akua is currently in high demand at essential European clubs and festivals such as Berghain, FUSE, Dekmantel, Draaimolen, and FOLD. Recently, she performed a B2B set with Luke Slater at the SOUNDIT Festival in Barcelona, where DJ Nobu curated a stage.

Welcoming Akua for her long-awaited Tokyo are Mari Sakurai, who’s been frequently touring Europe including venues such as Berghain and Bassiani in recent years and organises the techno party AFTERLIFE in her home turf, and MAYUDEPTH, co-organiser of the electronic music party VITAL and recently played for the African Acid Is The Future party at Berlin venue OHM this summer.

AZUMAYA features four fresh DJs from the local scene - Kyomi, a DJ based in Tokyo's dopest dance scene, will make her debut appearance at MIDNIGHT EAST/AZUMAYA; lostbaggae, who has worked at various clubs in Tokyo and now organises her own party purepure and co-organises LUNA LUNE with imus; m-int, who hosts ingenious parties such as CCC and Whirlpool; and Sht from Ready or Not, who blends organic sounds with his own psychedelic sensibilities.
